Cataract

Assuming the animal's optic nerve and retina function normally and the cataract removal is successful and thorough, good vision can be maintained even without an artificial lens implant. On the contrary, if the animal is hyperactive and the lens capsule is not healthy, implanting an artificial lens will only increase the chance of postoperative intraocular inflammation. Therefore, you must communicate with the doctor in detail before the operation and make sure the doctor has evaluated the health of the inside of the eye.

The success rate of cataract surgery depends on the experience of the doctor and the level of equipment. If the animal itself has advanced over-mature cataracts, or has other ophthalmic diseases such as uveitis, glaucoma, retinal detachment, etc., it is possible that the animal will become blind and the success rate of the surgery will be seriously reduced. Even if cataract surgery is performed reluctantly, vision cannot be restored and even more serious sequelae may occur.

Before cataract surgery, a detailed and comprehensive eye examination is required, such as corneal examination, slit lamp magnification examination of the lens, the structure of the anterior chamber of the eye, precise measurement of intraocular pressure, examination of tear secretion, and use of electroretinogram and intraocular ultrasound to check the health of the retina.

If the eye health is not fully assessed before surgery and the surgery is performed hastily, the result will mostly be failure and will make the animal more painful, such as corneal melting, severe intraocular inflammation after surgery, etc.

After choosing a hospital and a doctor, you must communicate with the doctor in detail and understand your condition before each examination.
Not every animal with cataracts is a good candidate for surgery, and not every animal that undergoes surgery regains sight.

Even for dogs that cannot undergo surgery, as long as they have regular eye health checks, early treatment of complications caused by cataracts, and most importantly, careful and attentive care from their owners, most animals can still live a happy and peaceful life even if they lose their eyesight.
